Glycerin: the essential by-product with multiple applications

FEED

In the process of producing biodiesel or refining oils and fats, a valuable by-product is generated: glycerin. Far from being a useless waste product, glycerin has become a strategic raw material for many industries thanks to its versatility, low cost and unique chemical properties.

What is glycerin?

Glycerin, also known as glycerol, is an alcohol with three hydroxyl groups (-OH), which gives it hygroscopic properties (it attracts water), viscosity and solubility in both water and alcohols. It appears as a transparent, colorless, odorless and sweet-tasting liquid, and can be of vegetable or animal origin, depending on the process from which it originates.

How is it obtained?

In the oleochemical industry, glycerin is obtained as a by-product in the production of biodiesel (from the transesterification of vegetable oils or animal fats) or in saponification processes (soap manufacture). After a refining process, it can be used in different qualities: crude, technical or pure (pharmaceutical or food grade).

Industrial applications of glycerin

Glycerin is a key product in many different sectors:

Chemical industry

It is used as a base to manufacture resins, antifreeze, plasticizers, lubricants or explosives (such as nitroglycerin).

Food

Food grade glycerin is used as a humectant, preservative and sweetener in bakery products, chewing gum or supplements.

Cosmetics and personal care

Thanks to its ability to retain moisture, glycerin is a key ingredient in creams, lotions, soaps, shampoos and toothpastes.

Pharmaceuticals

It acts as an excipient in syrups, soft capsules or oral solutions. It is also used in suppositories and topical medications.

Agriculture

In the formulation of liquid fertilizers, pesticides and feed additives, technical or refined glycerin is also used.

Glycerin in sustainable industry

In addition to its multiple applications, glycerin stands out as a biodegradable and non-toxic product, making it an environmentally friendly alternative in many industrial processes. Its production as a by-product of renewable processes, such as biodiesel, reinforces its role within a more circular and sustainable economy.
